About Dzene Muzila
My Story
This book was not born in a study lined with bookshelves. It was born in the pit, the fire, and the silence. That is how I opened From the Grave to Glory, and it is just as true of my life as it is of the book.
I am Dzene Muzila, an educator, author, preacher, and the founder of Emerald Academy. But titles have never told the whole story. My life has been shaped just as much by the things that went wrong as by the things that went right, and I have come to believe that this is exactly how God works. He buries what cannot go forward, refines what is genuine, and brings purpose out of what once looked like loss.
The Grave
There is something about a seed that nobody stops to think about. You hold it in your hand, small, dry, hard, and it looks like nothing. It looks, honestly, like something already dead. And the only way it becomes what it was made to be is if someone presses it into the ground, covers it, and waits.
For a long time, I believed I was the exception to that rule.
Growing up, school was never a battlefield for me. While other children crammed late into the night, I was outside chasing a ball on dusty ground until the sun disappeared. I would walk into an exam the next morning with little more than what I had heard in class, and come out near the top. It happened often enough that it stopped feeling like a gift and started feeling like something I was owed. Teachers praised me. My family celebrated me. And quietly, I built my entire sense of self on one foundation: I was intelligent, and that would be enough.
What nobody told me is that when you build your life on the gift instead of the Giver, you are not standing on solid ground. You are standing on a shelf that God, in His mercy, will eventually remove.
Mine was removed at university. Away from the structure I had always leaned on, natural ability proved to be no substitute for discipline, and within my first year my studies were discontinued. What looked like an academic failure became a deeper collapse. The identity I had built around being capable was shaken, and for a season I carried the weight of that failure quietly. Looking back, it became one of the defining turning points of my life. It was the grave where my pride had to be buried before anything real could grow.
The Fire
Failure was not the end of my story. It was the beginning of a different kind of education.
I returned to my studies later, not as the boy who relied on cleverness, but as a man who had learned what that reliance costs. This time I understood discipline, responsibility, and purpose, and I completed a Bachelor of Business Administration, going on to postgraduate study in higher education. Alongside the academic rebuilding was a slower, deeper one. I had given my life to Christ years earlier, but for a long time I could look disciplined on the outside while still wrestling within. God had to deal with pride, the need for approval, and the habit of measuring myself by appearance rather than surrender. Over time, my faith became less about presenting an image and more about becoming honest before Him.
That is the fire, the refining season where God purifies motives, burns away what does not belong, and prepares a person for what is coming. It is not comfortable. But it is where character is made.

The Glory
Out of that process came the work I am now known for.
In September 2017, I founded Emerald Academy. What began as a small vision for more personal, meaningful learning has grown into a homeschooling and tutoring institution serving primary and secondary learners across Botswana and Cambridge pathways. I have spent over a decade in the classroom, and out of that teaching came a growing catalogue of revision books for Cambridge IGCSE and O Level students, resources written to explain difficult ideas clearly and help learners find their footing. Through Emerald Designs and Emerald Publishers, I now help other authors bring their own books to life.
Beyond the classroom, I preach and write. My message returns, again and again, to a single conviction: that failure does not have to be final, that gifts must be developed through discipline, and that true greatness is found when a life is surrendered to God’s purpose.
But the glory I care about most is not public. I married my wife, Barutegi, and we are parents to our daughter, Agape, whose name means love, and whose life has reshaped how I understand legacy. I want the work I do publicly to remain consistent with the man I am becoming privately, as a husband and a father.
Still Becoming
The boy who once drifted for lack of discipline cannot seem to stop learning now. I am currently pursuing a Master of Science in Computer Science at Botho University, because the journey isn’t finished, and I don’t believe it’s meant to be.
This year, I am releasing my most personal book yet, From the Grave to Glory: Turning Brokenness Into Breakthrough, the fuller account of everything I’ve only glimpsed here. It is for anyone who has ever felt buried, forgotten, or tested beyond measure, and wondered whether their story could ever turn around.
Mine did. And I believe yours can too.
From the grave… to glory.
